Performed for the first time on 29 January 1781, Idomeneo marks a turning point in Mozart’s past and future opera production.
 The Metastasian canons are replaced by more humane and psychologically studied characters in a creative process that is a prelude to modernity; torn between love for his son and love for his homeland, the interior conflict of Idomeneo, King of Crete, goes beyond convention and becomes a true drama. In an attempt to escape the storm that is stopping him from reaching Crete, the King promises Neptune he will sacrifice the first person he meets when he comes ashore on the beach; to the King’s horror, it is his son and heir Idamante who first comes to his aid. The result is a truly humane drama involving not only father and son, but also two women who are in love and rivals, Ilia and Elettra. The happy ending is thanks to the god’s mercy.
